How to Obtain a Marriage or Civil Union License in New Jersey:
Applications:
- An application must be made at the New Jersey municipal office where one partner legally resides. If one partner does not live in the state of New Jersey, an application can be made at the New Jersey municipal office where the other partner legally resides. In either case, the ceremony may then take place anywhere in the State of New Jersey.
- If both partners live out of the State of New Jersey and want their ceremony to take place in New Jersey, an application MUST be made at the municipal office of the town where the the ceremony will take place. The ceremony may take place only in that town.
- The fee for the marriage license at all municipalities in New Jersey is $28.00. It is recommended that a money order or bank check rather than cash be given for the fee.
Requirements for the Application:
- The partners and one witness who is 18 years of age or older and knows the couple for a period of six months must apply for the license.
- Some towns will require proof of residency such as a driver's license, lease or tax return. Bring as much identification as possible. It is recommended that you apply 30 days before the ceremony. (If there is a problem with identification, i.e. a laminated social security card, there is time before the wedding to fix the problem.)
- Premarital blood tests are no longer necessary in New Jersey.
On the Wedding Day:
- Give Reverend Joseph your license PRIOR to the ceremony.
- Along with presenting Reverend Joseph your license, have the following ready prior to the ceremony so that the ceremony can begin on time:
- The unity candle (should be set up prior to ceremony on a small bistro type table immediately to the right of or in front of the ceremony location)
- Your rings (may be held by any witness)
- The ceremony fee
After the Ceremony:
-
Reverend Joseph and the two witnesses must sign the license immediately following the ceremony.
-
Reverend Joseph will file the license with the registrar in the municipality where the ceremony took place within 5 days after the ceremony.
-
It is also recommended that the couple request several CERTIFIED copies (with the Town's raised seal and not just a photocopy) of the license from the Registrar of the Municipality where the ceremony took place. Most Towns have the license recorded within 2 weeks after the ceremony and available for certified copies. These copies will be needed for name changes for driver’s license, auto registration , social security, insurance, etc.
Reverend Joseph STRONGLY recommends that you call the Town where the application is to be made for all of their requirements and an appointment.
